Cherry Caramel Phlox produces wave after wave of flowers in a gorgeous, subdued tan colour with cherry red centres. The branched stems are excellent as cut flowers, and they really fill a patio container. Annual Phlox thrives in cooler weather, so if it wanes in high summer, cut it back to 5cm (2") and expect a second flush of flowers in late.

In a small saucepan combine the sugar and remaining 1/4 C water. Bring to a boil over high heat, watching carefully until the mixture caramelizes and takes on a rich amber color. Remove from heat immediately. Stir in the butter (carefully, it will sputter), then stir into the cherry mixture. Chill until needed, up to a week.

Phlox seeds require complete darkness to germinate, so keep them away from all light sources until they sprout. I keep mine in a closet off the grow room with a reminder to water the seeds inside.

Phlox 'Cherry Caramel' 'Cherry Caramel', with its creamy petals and deep pinky red centres, has the most old-fashioned pretty flowers. The colour saturation varies and in a posy they create a lovely tapestry like effect. I didn't find they produced as many flowers as the other two, but those they did were choice.
