In former times the Alter Markt (old market) used to be Kiel's town center. The large square in front of St. Nikolai church and the old Town Hall was completely destroyed in a Second World War bomb raid. The original road system - a cross formed by parallel roads with the market place in the middle - was preserved. The reconstruction of the old market square was realized with glass pavilions.
