History The Castle Hochosterwitz was built on a limestone rock that rises 150m above the valley and allows the visitor a spectacular view over the neighbouring mountains, hills and countryside. The castle was first mentioned in 860. It was a refuge for the local population during the Turkish invasion in the 11th and 12th century.

Hochosterwitz is an outstanding example of a medieval fortress and stronghold. What makes the castle appear so strong is the obviously well suited position of the whole complex. The winding access is blocked by 14 fortified gates and opens up at the armoury yard in front of the main castle. The 14 gates are the landmark of the castle.

Hochburg The west side is the central front of the castle. The middle part with a flight of seven windows, is the oldest building dating from around 1540, the northern wing of the main front was built in 1575/76 according to the inscription panel to set it again after the round tower earlier model.
