St. Peter's Square
Piazza San Pietro or St. Peter's Square was designed by renowned sculptor Bernini under the direction of Pope Alexander VII. It was built between 1656 and 1667 on the site where the apostle Peter was killed and therefore named after him. It was also built as an addition to St. Peter's Basilica, to highlight the magnificence of the cathedral.
