59 Rivoli nasce nel 1999 su iniziativa degli artisti Gaspard Delanoë, Kalex e Bruno Dumont che decidono di occupare l'edificio situato al n° 59 di rue de Rivoli a Parigi, abbandonato da otto anni dal Crédit Lyonnais e dalle autorità pubbliche. Alcuni giorni dopo, una dozzina di artisti decidono di occupare l'edificio e di allestirci i loro studi.
