San Carpoforo is not just any church. It was the first basilica of the diocese of Como and its first cathedral. It was built at the end of the fourth century, at the behest of the first bishop of Como, San Felice, consecrated bishop and sent to Como in 386 by Ambrogio, bishop of Milan from 374 to 397.

The Basilica of San Carpoforo is located in the neighborhood of Camerlata, within easy reach from Castel Baradello. Dating back to the 6th century, it was the first Christian church built under the Diocese of Como for want of its first bishop, Felice. It was therefore the first cathedral of the city.
