It is thought to be a direct descendent of the European short-tailed sheep, an ancient animal commonplace across the continent. However, it wasn't until 1962 that the Valais Blacknose was recognized as a breed.

The Valais Blacknose sheep is a breed of domestic sheep from Switzerland. It was actually originated in the Valais region of Switzerland. The breed is also known by some other names such as Blacknosed Swiss, Visp, Visperschaf, Walliser Schwarznaseschaf and Wallis Blacknose. It is a coarsewooled breed and raised mainly for meat.

Valais Blacknose sheep should have black noses, ears, eye rims, knees, and ankles. Both male and female should have spiral horns. For hundreds of years, the Valais Blacknose was only found in the areas surrounding the Valais region of Switzerland. However, in 2014 the breed was imported to the United Kingdom.
