L'aspetto attuale del piazzale risale però agli anni '30: fino a quel momento, infatti, Colonne e Basilica erano separate da un isolato di abitazioni popolari, che venne abbattuto per restituire maggiore respiro al complesso. Nel piazzale vennero posati anche i binari del tram, poi spostati negli anni '90 oltre le Colonne.

The colonnade, consisting mainly of 16 tall Corinthian columns in a row, now fronts an open square. In the 4th century, the columns were moved here, after removal from a likely 2nd century.
