Piata Victoriei was created in 1906 when Timisoara medieval fortifications were demolished to create an esplanade that stretches from Opera Piazetta to the Romanian Orthodox Mitropolitan Cathedral. The focal point is the towering Romanian Orthodox Mitropolitan Cathedral ( Catedrala Ortodoxa Mitropolitana ) that lies on the southern edge of the square.
