After only a few spins of the disc, I'm already willing to rank "The Hunter" as my top album of 2011, right next to Red Fang's "Murder The Mountains". In the Mastodon catalogue, I'd rank it higher than "Blood Mountain", but it doesn't match "Leviathan" or "Crack The Skye".

Fifth album in, a new type face, a new surrealist animal depiction on the cover - Mastodon must mean business. But step back a little, keeping in mind that they are just a band with a trove of ruffled scales and cool drum fills (oh, and a banjo) and you'll find that The Hunter is no more a conception than anything they've ever done before, really.

emergencydog. 85. The Hunter is indeed a step down comparing to Crack the Skye. It might even be in competition for their worst record ever yet I would argue that Mastodon have never produced a genuinely bad record. The Hunter has some highlights but a majority of the songs are rather forgettable.
