Mark Brandon "Chopper" Read (17 November 1954 - 9 October 2013) was an Australian convicted criminal, gang member and author. Read wrote a series of semi-autobiographical fictional crime novels and children's books. The 2000 film Chopper is based on his life. Early life.

Read's first exhibition of 45 works in Fitzroy was a sell-out on the first night. One reporter described Chopper as a "visual artist whose interest in the arts was sparked by a friendship with the 2000 Archibald prize winner Adam Cullen". Interestingly, Chopper doesn't seem to agree.

Though when he wasn't committing crime, Chopper Read made a living as a children's book author and artist - 500,000 copies of Read's books have been sold to date, making him one of Australia's most successful authors. It's his art though that will be explored in an exciting art exhibition currently on show at the Geelong Gaol Museum.

41 original artworks painted by Chopper Read whilst he was in gaol, will be on show and for sale, as well as signed Chopper memorabilia and a full sized coffin featuring a portrait of Chopper that has been crafted into a coffee table. Chopper signed and dedicated all his paintings to underworld criminals, and people who inspired him - for example Flowers for Carl and Tribute to Nancy Wake.
