Peckham Rye Lane Baptist Chapel National Churches Trust

Rye Lane Baptist Chapel was started in 1818 when a pastor decided to invite worshippers into his home on Hill Street, after he was unable to find a Baptist church in the area. His services became so popular that he had to relocate to a local barn, and then to a school, before a permanent chapel was built the following year.

RLC as a church fellowship has its roots throughout its history in a more traditional style of worship. However, we are under the ultimate leadership of God who encourages people to move forward, grow, learn, and to be relevant in the community we live.

Please find below an introduction to our Pastoral Team. Every bible-believing church is ultimately under the 'leadership' of God, and the 'Head of His Church' is the Lord Jesus Christ. Different churches have different structures of leadership and RLC has a structure of leaders made up of the Pastoral team, deacons and department leads.

Rye Lane Baptist Chapel is a fine example of a Victorian nonconformist church situated in the heart of Peckham on the main shopping street. The original chapel, built in 1819 was demolished to make way for the railway in 1863. The new building, started in May 1863 was opened for worship in November that same year.

I was born at 70 Denman Road in 1913. My sister Jessie worked at Jones and Higgins in Rye Lane. As a family we attended Rye Lane Baptist Chapel, where I sang bass in the choir, and played the double bass in Dr Green's orchestra on Sunday evenings. We held open-air services in Hanover Street (now Highshore Road) opposite the chapel.
