The front end switched from link pins to ball joints, this alone must have saved them millions. The 1964-67 link pin front axle is the most complicated bus front-end (to manufacture).

Tie rods are cheap and easy to replace. A pickle fork set will probably be necessary but can be picked up from sears for something like $30. Once you have the front of the bus on jack stands, you should easily be able to have the torsion arms swapped out and the tie rod replaced in 6 or so hours. $40 for a front end allignment and you are on.
